TaylorMade R5 Dual Type D - £299(g)

TaylorMade R5 Dual Type D

DESIGN
As you'd expect the look isn't too disimilar to its very popular older brother, the r7 Quad. The head looks powerful but not bulky and hard to manouvre. But this doesn't come with adjustable cartridges. As always with TaylorMade it has a sleek, modern look.

TEC TALK
The two permanent cartridges are designed to help deliver a high moment of inertia for maximum clubhead stability. So forgiveness should be its best trait. The Type D model is engineered to promote a draw, while the Type N is said to promote a more neutral flight.

PERFORMANCE
Our testers seems suitably impressed by the high long drives on offer. The face does look quite closed at addressed ideal if you're used to seeing your ball veer off to the right but less inspiring if you nuture a hook.

TOTAL GOLF VERDICT
At £299, we reckon TaylorMade have got the pricing spot on. It's a good quality performer aid at mid handicap golfers and the technoilogical benefits do seem to work. A sound choice for anyone in the market.

Ping G2 £249

Ping G2

DESIGN
Ping have developed a modern look for their latest tee time treat and the dark blue head and half moon alignment aid combine remarkably well. The 460cc head looks powerful behind the ball promising extra high-flying yards and plenty of room to forgive a ropey strike.

TEC TALK
The 460cc head is made of titanium and features an internal weighting system to reduce spin and launch the ball higher for added distance and accuracy. The thin, variable thickness face is precision machined for a higher energy transfer to provide forgiveness on off-centre hits.

PERFORMANCE
Producing a quality driver that offers the mid-handicapper extra yards and a forgiving strike is a common goal for many of the golf markets' major players. And take it from us Ping's new G2 will be hard to beat. A crisp strong sound at impact results in a high ball flight that's guaranteed to get you further down the fairway.

TOTAL GOLF VERDICT
You can usually expect to pay top whack for top quality sticks but Ping will only ask £249 for the G2. And with such a solid performance and design any player looking for a more consistent driving game should take this out for a spin.
